Dusty
KC name, Squire of the County, Dark Sable, D.O.B. 02-01-05, WSD.

Dusty was advertised as a red tri pup, so off we went to see him. He was in a stable all on his own and very scared of people.
As I went to pick up this little bundle, he ran away and hid from me.
The only time he was confident, was when his mum jumped into the stable to see what was going on. I explained to the farmer that this pup was a sable (not a red tri) and that we were going to look at another litter in the same area and would get back to him that evening to let him know what we had decided to do. Off we travelled to visit the other litter and all I could think of was this very scared little sable pup. We viewed the other litter and they were all very nice but I couldn’t get this image out of my head about the sad little pup all alone in a cold and draughty stable, so we decided to go and rescue him from his miserable state. Dusty found it very difficult to accept human company, and it took a lot of TLC, to help bring this little chap out of himself. We could never let him off his lead as he would run away so we gently encouraged him to respond to a little tug now and again, and rewarded him when he understood what we wanted from him, this took a long time but we got there in the end.
Things quickly improved over the months. Then we started Obedience training with him which he took to brilliantly going up and up classes very quickly. When Dusty was twelve months old we started agility training, he just loved it, he became a very fast and confident dog in no time.
Dusty was my first serious agility dog, we qualified for the finals at Super Dogs. We won the jumping round but messed up the agility round. We also qualified for the Spillers Final but got E’d . Dusty and I won one of the agility rounds at Discover Dogs, now a beautiful crystal bowl is displayed in our trophy
cabinet at home. Dusty never won an agility round while in novice, but lots of jumping rounds which won him into seniors a few months before they changed the rules that you needed one jumping and one agility, or two agility rounds to qualify into seniors. We did very well in senior jumping over the years though. Dusty semi retired at about ten years old as he struggled with full height jumps, we now do, very successfully, any size and veteran jumping, very rare he is not in the top ten places.
Dusty qualified for the It Barks final 2005 and would have maybe won it if it wasn’t for my bad handling. Never mind he has qualified again for this year 2006, so we shall see if I can handle him a bit better this time.
